The legendary Whoopi Goldberg turned heads on the 2025 Met Gala red carpet, fully embracing this year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” with an unforgettable ensemble by Thom Browne. Known for her fearless fashion choices, the EGOT-winning actress and host of The View delivered a bold, tailored look that was both theatrical and refined.
Her custom outfit featured a floor-length, black duchess satin raglan-sleeve dress layered with a jaw-dropping overcoat — a piece of couture brilliance, crafted from stacked matte white sequins. The coat, heavily embroidered with 350,000 matte white sequins, included lacing details along the back and voluminous sculptural sleeves that amplified its dramatic flair.
Goldberg completed her look with a formal black top hat from Thom Browne’s Fall 2015 archive in wool bouclé, embellished with a delicate veil. A white pocket square, a crisp black tie, and black-and-white longwing patent leather boots gave the outfit a tuxedo-inspired elegance with an avant-garde twist.
The accessories told a story of mythical craftsmanship. Handcrafted in New York by L’Enchanteur, a Brooklyn-based design duo, her jewelry included:
Brass finger caps
A gold link chain
Gold sunglasses (a Whoopi signature)
A stunning keyhole brooch adorned with black opal and blue and white diamonds
Statement rings set with green tourmaline, tanzanite, garnet, purple sapphire, and diamonds
A small black-and-white handbag and oversized silver hoop earrings rounded out the ensemble, balancing modern edge with old-school glamour.
Whoopi’s relationship with Thom Browne has long been established — she’s a loyal supporter of the designer’s fashion week presentations, including the Fall 2023 and Spring 2017 collections. And this Met Gala moment is another chapter in her increasingly bold red carpet evolution. Earlier this year, she stunned at the Oscars in a dramatic navy blue Christian Siriano ballgown, proving she’s not afraid to take up space — with purpose and style.
This year's Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, spotlighted Black elegance and menswear through the lens of “Tailored for You.” With cochairs like Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour, the event celebrated identity, structure, and storytelling — and Whoopi Goldberg’s appearance did exactly that.
