The Met Gala is one of the most significant and highly discussed events in the fashion world. Its official name is the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit.

How did it originate? When did the ball appear?

The idea for a benefit gala dedicated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute arose in 1948. Its founder was the fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert. Initially, it was a dinner aimed at raising funds for the newly established Costume Institute and drawing attention to its work. The first balls were more modest and intended for New York's social elite.

When does the ball take place?

The Met Gala traditionally takes place on the first Monday in May. This has become a firmly established date in the fashion calendar, marking the opening of the Costume Institute's annual spring exhibition.

How is the theme conceived?

The theme of the Met Gala is closely linked to the theme of the Costume Institute's annual exhibition. The Curator of the Costume Institute (since 1995, this position has been held by Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue) and her team determine the exhibition's theme, which can be dedicated to a specific designer, a period in fashion history, a cultural phenomenon, or a concept. This same theme becomes the dress code for the gala's guests.

Why are people dressed so strangely?

It is the dress code, dictated by the exhibition's theme, that is the reason for the extravagant and sometimes strange outfits. Guests, among whom are numerous celebrities, designers, and influential figures in the industry, perceive the theme as a creative assignment. They strive to interpret it as originally, effectively, and memorably as possible, often collaborating with renowned designers to create unique looks. The goal is not just to follow the dress code but to create a work of art that will be discussed and analyzed.

What do guests do at the ball?

The Met Gala program includes several key moments:

  • The Red Carpet: This is arguably the most spectacular part of the evening, where guests showcase their outfits, pose for photographers, and give interviews.

  • Cocktail Hour: After walking the red carpet, guests gather for cocktails, where they can socialize and get a preview of the exhibition.

  • Dinner: A formal dinner follows, during which there is usually entertainment, including performances by artists.

  • Exhibition Viewing: Guests are among the first to see the new Costume Institute exhibition.

Who is invited to the Met Gala?

The guest list for the Met Gala is strictly controlled by Anna Wintour. Invitations are sent to celebrities from the worlds of film, music, fashion, art, sports, and business. The decision on who will be invited is based on their cultural influence, relevance, and alignment with the spirit of the event. Tickets for the ball are very expensive, and their sale is one of the main sources of funding for the Costume Institute.

What will happen in 2025?

The theme of the Met Gala 2025 is "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." The event will take place on Monday, May 5th, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and will be dedicated to the Costume Institute's spring exhibition, exploring the influence of Black dandyism and menswear on the formation of identity in the Afro-Atlantic diaspora.

About the Exhibition and Theme

The exhibition is inspired by Monica L. Miller's book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity (2009) and spans over 300 years of history – from the 18th century to the present day. The exposition will be divided into 12 thematic sections, including "Legacy," "Presence," "Coolness," and "Ownership," and will feature clothing, works of art, and photographs showcasing the evolution of Black menswear.

Dress Code: "Tailored for You"

The official dress code for the event is "Tailored for You," emphasizing an individual approach to style and a focus on menswear tailoring. Guests are invited to interpret the theme through the lens of personal taste, including elements of classic menswear such as zoot suits, vibrant suits, hats, and brooches, as well as drawing inspiration from Afrofuturism and ballroom culture.

Organizers and Participants

The co-chairs of the Met Gala 2025 are Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour, with LeBron James serving as honorary chair. The committee also includes notable figures such as Simone Biles, Regina King, and Usher.

Thus, the Met Gala is not just a social event but a significant cultural phenomenon that unites fashion, art, and philanthropy, and each year sets new trends and sparks lively discussions.
